Every leader at some stage faces a decision where whatever he/she decides will lead to the deaths of thousands, no matter what he/she decides the leader will be blamed for those deaths (ie they face a no win scenario).

When faced with such a decision, the true leader (the one that will go down in history as a great leader) needs to grasp history by the privates and seek Captain Kirk's Kobayashi Maru solution (one that breaks the rules and dispenses with the binary choice no win scenario).

It should be noted that not every leader has gone down in history as a great leader!

The Danger of Defined Paths

 

Defined paths (this is how things have been done before) and copycat policies are not always the best way to handle situations such as Covid, especially when they make things worse. 

The trouble is, no country or leader will admit that they have got it wrong.

Hence many countries are now doubling down on restrictions that will make things worse.

If local lockdowns/restrictions, imposed and managed by central government are so effective, why is it that in those areas which have had these lockdowns/restrictions for some time do the alleged cases continue to rise?
